  In a post on its website, White Ops explained: "The White Ops Story Threat Intelligence and Research team recently identified and detected a fraudulent operation that resulted in fake advertisements on consumer devices. The app collected more than 20 million downloads.

"What these applications have in common - apart from their fake tactics, their focus is on beauty. Most want to be selfie apps that add beauty filters to users' photos, while simultaneously giving ads context. Since the first app was published, fraudsters have published a new app on average every 11 days, and on average, these apps have been removed after 17 days. Pulled from the Play Store.

  "This number tells the story of a cat and mouse game, in which the Play Store searches for counterfeiters as well as removes and reviews counterfeit apps. The counterfeiter may have developed a more robust mechanism to avoid identification.
